Enteric Illnesses (Food and Waterborne)
Enteric illnesses are infections of the gastrointestinal tract that are caused by many different types of bacteria, viruses and parasites. Enteric illnesses are most commonly transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water. Some of these enteric illnesses can also spread through contact with infected individuals (person to person), or through direct contact with animals or their environments.
- Amebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica)
- Botulism (Clostridium botulinum)
- Campylobacteriosis (Campylobacter spp.)
- Cholera (Vibrio cholerae)
- Clostridium difficile (Clostridium difficile)
- Cryptosporidiosis (Cryptosporidium spp.)
- Escherichia coli O157 (Escherichia coli O157)
- Giardiasis (Giardia lamblia)
- Hepatitis A
- Listeriosis (Listeria monocytogenes)
- Norovirus
- Salmonellosis (Salmonella spp.)
- Shigellosis (Shigella spp.)
- Staphylococcal Food Intoxication (Staphylococcus aureus)
- Toxoplasmosis (Toxoplasma gondii)
- Trichinellosis (Trichinella)
- Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fever (Salmonella typhi or S. paratyphi)
- Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci/VRE (Enterococcus spp.)
- Yersiniosis (Yersinia enterocolitica or Y. pseudotuberculosis)
