Life Lease Agreements

Does the landlord have to give the tenant a copy of the life lease agreement?

After the tenant signs the lease and gives it to the landlord, the landlord has 21 days to sign the lease and give the tenant a copy of it.

What happens if there’s a conflict between the life lease agreement and The Life Leases Act or The Residential Tenancies Act?

The Life Leases Act or The Residential Tenancies Act would overrule the lease.  A landlord can’t include conditions in the lease that don’t comply with the legislation.

If a landlord and tenant have a question or dispute how can they get help?

Either a tenant or landlord can ask the Residential Tenancies Branch for help.  The Branch will give information or try to help resolve a dispute through mediation.  If mediation doesn’t work, the Branch may make a decision about what must happen.

The Branch can make decisions and issue orders on most disputes between landlords and tenants.  Sometimes the Branch holds a hearing before making a decision.  If the question or dispute is a very complex issue or involves a lot of money or several tenants, the Branch may decide that a judge in the Court of Queen’s Bench should hear the case.
