Employment enquiries

Q:  How often do you update the job opportunities website?

A:  The Civil Service Commission updates the website on a regular basis.

Q:  How can I receive direct updates on new jobs being advertised?

A:  You can receive automated updates on new jobs advertised by subscribing to an RSS feed.

Q:  How can I get job information if I am hearing impaired?

A:  If you are hearing impaired, telephone TDD in Winnipeg at 204-945-1437 or go to our job opportunities site.

Q:  How do I apply for a job in the Manitoba government?

A:  See How to apply.

Q:  What does open competition mean?  Closed competition?

A:  See Competition (posting) types.

Q:  How do I know if a competition for a job is open or closed? 

A:  The job advertisement will say what type of competition it is.

Q:  Who can apply to a closed competition?

A:  See Competition (posting) types.

Q:  Who do I contact to get a copy of the job description?

A:  The job advertisement will have contact information in it.  Make sure you have the job advertisement number available when you contact them.

Q:  Where do I send my application in response to a job advertisement?

A:  The job advertisement will have information on how and where to submit an application in it.  Make sure you include the job advertisement number in your application.

Q: What is the process after I apply?

A:  If you have applied in response to an advertisement on the job opportunities website, see After you apply.

Q:  I saw a job advertisement but now I can’t find it.  What happened to it?

A: If you no longer see a job advertisement, either the competition closed or was cancelled by the department.  

Q:  Can I send in an application to be kept on file and considered for future vacancies?

A: Currently we do not have the capacity to keep applications on file and match them to vacancies when they occur. It is in your best interest to apply for positions as they are posted where you meet the qualifications.

Q:  Is there a summer job program for students and how do I apply?

A: See STEP Services.

Q:  Where do I find job postings in other jurisdictions such as in the City of Winnipeg, in other provinces/territories or in the Government of Canada?

A:  See Canadian Public Service Links.

Q:  When can I expect an update on my application?

A: The screening process usually takes two to four weeks after the closing date of the competition.  Please note that only those selected for further consideration will be contacted.

Q:  I live outside of Canada. Can I apply for Manitoba government jobs?

A: To be considered for employment opportunities in the Manitoba government, you must be legally entitled to work in Canada and are able to provide documentation to demonstrate your eligibility upon request. Only applications of candidates who meet this condition of employment will be processed.

As a Condition of Employment, you must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada for regular employment.  Foreign Nationals with valid authorization to work for any employer in Canada may be considered for temporary opportunities in the Manitoba government.

We do not provide sponsorship for a foreign national to obtain valid authorization to work in Canada.


Veterans

Q: Where can I get information about veterans’ preference?

A: If you are a veteran, or the surviving spouse or common-law partner of an individual lost as a result of service in the armed forces you may be eligible to receive preference in the selection process. See Veterans’ Preference Policy for further information.

Q: How do I declare my veterans’ status?

A: If you are selected for further assessment you will be asked to provide documentation that confirms veteran status. See Veterans’ Preference for further information.

 


Employment equity

Q:  Where can I get information about employment equity?

A: If you are interested in the Manitoba government's employment equity policy and programs see:  Diversity and Inclusion.

Q:  Where do I declare my employment equity status?

A:  We normally recommend applicants declare in their covering letter or resumé.  You may also complete an Employment Equity Declaration Form and attach it to your application.

Q:  Do I need to provide proof of my employment equity status?

A:  No, you only need to self-declare in writing. Self-declaration is voluntary and must be made every time you apply.

Q:  Does the Manitoba government have any employment equity programs that help people get a job in the government?

A: Career Gateway Program is a placement and referral program for external job seekers who register in the CSC Career Gateway Program inventory and who self declare as a member of one of the following employment equity groups: Indigenous (IN), Visible minority (VM) and Persons with Disabilities (PWD), and who have relevant skills and abilities to perform jobs across the Manitoba government. Participants are classified at the first level of the position for which they are hired.

Employment equity is also a factor in the selection progress for all competitions. In some situations, competitions are equity designated for, or provide equity preference to, one or more specific equity group(s).

Q:  If I apply for the Career Gateway Program will my application automatically be considered for advertised positions?

A: No. It is your responsibility to monitor the job opportunities site and, if you see a job advertised that you feel you are qualified for, you must submit an application directly in response to the advertisement.  See How to apply.

 

Indigenous persons


Q:  How do I know if I qualify as an Indigenous person?

Q:  Does the Manitoba government have any programs that help Indigenous people get a job in the government? 

A: In addition to the Career Gateway Program, we also support Touchstone groups that emphasize providing support through community among Indigenous employees.

Employment equity is also a factor in the selection progress for all competitions. In some situations, competitions are equity designated for or provide equity preference to Indigenous persons.

 

Persons with disabilities

Q:  What types of disabilities would qualify me as a person with disabilities?
