Definitions
Appellant
The person who appeals a decision made by a department under a designated act
Chair
The person who is in charge of the appeal hearing
Court of Appeal
The Court of Appeal in Manitoba
Department
Manitoba Families or Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning (depending on the designated act)
Designated Act
- The Adoption Act,
(a.1) The Child and Family Services Act, - The Community Child Care Standards Act,
- The Manitoba Assistance Act,
- The Social Services Administration Act or a regulation under that Act,
- The Adults Living with an Intellectual Disability Act,
- The Disability Support Act
- Any other Act or regulation designated as a designated Act in the regulations.
Designated Officer
A person who has the legal responsibility for a decision under one of the acts designated in The Social Services Appeal Board Act (ex: usually the director of a Manitoba Families program)

Order
The written decision of the Appeal Board and the written reasons for that decision
Respondent
The person representing the Department at the appeal hearing. In some cases, the designated officer is also referred to as the respondent.
