Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for STEP employment you must be:
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or an international student.
- A student currently attending school.
- 16 years of age or older.
When referring students to government department positions, STEP Services gives preference to students who live in the city, town or community where the position is located.
Employment Opportunities
STEP Services refers students to employment with:
- Government departments.
- Crown corporations (eg., Manitoba Hydro).
Types of Positions
Full-time positions:
- Available May to August.
- Between 36.25 and 40 hours per week.
Part-time positions:
- Available September and April.
- Between 7.25 and 40 hours per week.
Cooperative Education positions:
- Available all year.
- Full-time.
- Require approval by educational institution.
Wages
Hourly wages are determined by the complexity of the job duties and range between $15.30 and $18.27. Some positions and cooperative education placements may pay wages higher than $18.27.
Hours of Work
For most full-time positions, student employees work Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM (or 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM).
For part-time positions, the number of days and hours varies and is determined by the employer.
Some positions may involve weekend work, shift work, or overtime.
The Hiring Process
STEP Services collects thousands of student registrations, each containing detailed information about a student's skills, abilities, educational background, and work preferences.
When a government department decides to hire a student, it contacts STEP Services and provides detailed information about the employment position. This includes a description of the skills, abilities, education, and work preferences required for the position.
Using this information, STEP Services searches the database and identifies students who best match the position requirements. A short-list of the top candidates is developed and those students are contacted to determine if they wish to interview for the position. Departments, not STEP Services, conduct the interviews.
Students who interview but do not get the job remain in the database and may be eligible for future positions.
Each year, there is a very high demand for a limited number of student positions. Many factors influence whether or not you receive a call from STEP Services including the number of available positions, where positions are located, the required skills and abilities, educational background, and when you registered.
All applicants are strongly encouraged to conduct a comprehensive, self-directed job search in addition to their registration with STEP Services.
Interviews
If you are identified as a candidate for a student employment opportunity, the department will contact you with details about the position and ask if you are interested in an interview.
If you choose to accept an invitation to an interview, please ensure you arrive 10-15 minutes before the interview. The department may also ask you to submit your resume in advance of the interview.
If you are the successful candidate, you will be contacted by the department directly (not STEP Services). If you are unsuccessful, your registration with STEP Services will remain in the database.
STEP Services does not contact you regarding the outcome of the interview. Follow-up questions should be directed to the department that conducted the interview.

Privacy
Personal information collected under the authority of STEP Services will be used and disclosed for the purpose of determining your eligibility for employment opportunities as well as research and evaluation purposes with the Manitoba Government, related organizations, and private sector employers participating in provincial government employment programs. This information may be used to contact you in the future for follow-up and evaluation purposes.
