Wetland Restoration and Enhancement

The purpose of the Wetland Restoration and Enhancement BMP is to restore and enhance wetlands to:

  • Enhance water storage capacity of a watershed
  • Reduce peak flows, which can moderate the timing and volume of runoff and reduce negative impacts downstream
  • Improve water quality by capturing sediments, nutrients, contaminants and pesticides
  • Protect aquifers and enhancement of recharge
  • Improve wildlife habitat and biodiversity
  • Increase carbon sequestration

The deadline for applications is April 4, 2023.

Eligible Applicants

Watershed Districts

Eligible Activities

  • Engineering and consultative fees to restore a previously drained wetland or enhance an existing wetland.
  • Construction of water level controls for wetland restoration
  • Revegetation of restored wetland area and adjacent uplands

Project Timeline

Projects will have eighteen months to be completed.

Cost Share Funding

Watershed districts can be reimbursed for up to 100 per cent of total approved eligible costs.

  • There is a $100,000 maximum funding cap per application worksheet.
  • There is a $300,000 funding cap per watershed per year.
