Alternative Specimen Collection Methods for Children and Youth

Children and youth aged four and up who are unable or have difficulties with a deep nasal swab (NP swab) may have the option of a throat swab or swish and gargle (spit) sample at select sites.  The deep nasal swab  remains the best way to detect COVID-19.  Throat swabs or swish and gargle options will only be offered under specific circumstances, based on availability and at the discretion of the health care provider taking the sample.

Sites where alternative specimen collection methods may be available are listed below.   Note: availability at a given site may vary and is not guaranteed.
