Alternative Specimen Collection Methods for Children and Youth

Children and youth aged four and up who are unable or have difficulties with a deep nasal swab (NP swab) may have the option of a throat swab or swish and gargle (spit) sample at select sites.  The deep nasal swab  remains the best way to detect COVID-19.  Throat swabs or swish and gargle options will only be offered under specific circumstances, based on availability and at the discretion of the health care provider taking the sample.
