Wondering what progress is being made on climate action in Manitoba? There are several tools we use to track progress:
The Manitoba government sets goals and tracks progress on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with an Emissions Target. Key features of this approach include:
On May 2, 2024, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) submitted its 2024 National Inventory Report (NIR) on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the United Nations as required under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The 2024 NIR shows that Manitoba’s 2018-2022 Emissions Reductions Target of 1 Mt cumulative emissions reduction target has been achieved, with reductions totalling 2.45 Mt for this period.
The Expert Advisory Council (EAC) provides advice on the setting of Manitoba’s Emissions Targets. Learn more about the EAC’s recommendations and governments response here.
*It is common to measure and report GHG emissions on an annual basis. However, GHGs stay in our atmosphere for decades; they have a cumulative impact on the climate. In other words, if we want to understand the impacts of GHG emissions, we need to understand the total, not just the current amount that is being emitted. This is why Manitoba tracks cumulative emissions not annual emissions.
Manitoba is a net exporter of electricity through existing interprovincial and international electricity transmission lines. Manitoba exports its clean electricity to Saskatchewan, Ontario and the US.
First Nation Communities Engagement on Climate Adaptation in Manitoba
In early 2023, the Province of Manitoba, with the assistance of Scatliff + Miller + Murray, reached out to all First Nations in Manitoba to gain a better understanding of the observed and anticipated climate impacts within these communities and their traditional territories. Through a variety of in person and virtual engagement and an online survey, feedback was received from members of 26 of the 63 First Nations in Manitoba.
Manitoba’s green building program outlines requirements for green building practices for government funded projects with a focus on new construction.
Sustainable Procurement Manitoba
The Government of Manitoba has a sustainable procurement policy. Sustainable Procurement Manitoba’s information supports government reporting entities and municipalities on procurement and offers information for businesses and other organizations.
