Manitoba's Surface Water Management Strategy

Back

Next

The Province of Manitoba announced the Surface Water Management Strategy initiative in a Speech from the Throne on October 20, 2011.  An additional commitment to develop a comprehensive Surface Water Management Strategy, which includes efforts to help preserve and protect Lake Winnipeg, was stated in a Speech from the Throne on November 19, 2012.

The purpose of the Surface Water Management Strategy is to engage stakeholders to gather insight, advice, and input into the development of new strategic policy direction to support decision making for the future management of surface water in the province.  The stakeholder engagement process began with the Surface Water Management Summit in April 2012.  A "What We Heard" interim report was released in November 2012. A final strategy is planned for completion by Spring 2013.

Input from stakeholders is essential in the development of the Surface Water Management Strategy. Many decisions on values and priorities around water will be required to develop an effective strategy. Furthermore, the Province of Manitoba in partnership with the Manitoba Water Council hosted a Surface Water Management Summit on April 3, 2012, to begin an extensive stakeholder engagement process that will take place through Fall 2012. Additionally on April 12, 2012, many municipal officials participated in a stakeholder engagement workshop to gather their views on the Surface Water Management Strategy during the Association of Manitoba Municipalities' Municipal Officials Seminar.
